Moroccan Argan Oil Review, Does it really work? What is science behind squalene.

Published by:

This advice you always hear from the magazine ads, numerous guests of morning and daytime shows.

Great advice, no doubts.

But how to turn a dull, dry adult skin into soft, radiant and obviously well-moisturized young skin? Well, there are numerous products on the market: from relatively cheap drug-store products to expensive skin care from the department stores. I tried, and tried and tried. First, from medium price level – such as Lancome, Clarins. The result I even could not tell because my skin just immediately became irritated. I tried cheap ones such as well-advertised Olay Regenist. My skin pores became nearly permanently clogged, it was hard to clear them. Most recently I tested Channel’s moisturizer but, surprisingly for such excellent line of products, the cream is not absorb well.

I decided to stop experimenting with expensive products and started looking for the natural products, focusing on natural oils with century old excellent reputation.

Why oil? Babies and kids skin is the best of all ages because their skin produces specific oily compounds, which are optimal to keep the skin moist.

With honorable reference to Cleopatra I started my trials with the Moroccan Argan Oil. After couple of days I realized that I couldn’t begin my day without application of this oil to the face, neck and hands. My skin became fresh and skin tone increased. I bought the oil to my friends and later they reported the same effect. So what is the secret of the Argan oil that makes it a good moisturizer? My quest to find the magic ingredient of the argan oil led me to a very interesting finding.

There is a unique molecule called squalene. It is a very long hydrocarbon with 6 unsaturated bonds. This structure indicates that this very hydrophobic molecule is capable to accept hydrophilic (water-soluble molecules) and transfer them across the cellular lipid layer. Our skin sebum naturally contains 10-12% of squalene thus helping the skin to absorb moisture and oxygen. Some essential oils contain squalene including the Moroccan Argan. I did not find yet how much squalene is in Argan oil but it is around 0.7% in olive oil, a very well established natural source of squalene. Squalene was discovered a century ago in the liver of the pacific shark. Indeed in humans, squalene is synthesized in exclusively in the liver and in the skin. The high-end very expensive skin care products contain squalene extracted from the shark liver as a major moisturizing ingredient. Squalene is oxidizes very easy when expose to air. In some skin care products squalene is substituted with its chemically modified saturated form called squalane. This squalane is extracted from some squalene-rich varieties of olive oil. Both compounds are safe for human skin application and consumption.

Thus squalene of Argan oil can serve as a good natural moisturizer for the skin. Additionally, its ability to transfer oxygen across the skin epidermis can revitalize the skin and maintain its health. Other active components of the Argan oil will be discussed in next post.

My Experience With Vitality Colostrum from Nutrition Topia

Published by:

vitalityI live in Toledo, OH. Lake Erie, a major source of drinking water in Toledo, is contaminated with cyanobacteria, which produces a group of chemicals called microcystins. When I heard this news (we were under state of emergency when elevated levels of microcystins were registered in our drinking water) I immediately analyzed what are the consequences for human health. They are known mostly for their liver toxicity in humans and cause skin rash and mouth sore. Studies showed that in rodents and in fish these compounds causes immune imbalance. Indeed that time I had swollen glands under my chin, very painful irritation in my mouth and abdominal discomfort.

Fortunately, I did my research and had bought a bottle of colostrum, from Vitality Colostrum, a few days into this outbreak. I used it for one week and all the symptoms were gone. Of course, I do not have a strong proof that my recovery was due to colostrum (there was no a control study on exactly identical individual).

However, I do believe colostrum is a supplement with great health benefits. Colostrum contains huge amount of IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor 1), Immunoglobulin, and other molecules, such as Lactoferrin, promote so-called innate immunity, which is characterized by the immune cells reaction to any foreign microorganism (not necessary a pathogen) with molecular patterns on their surfaces different from those present in the host organism.

I like Vitality Colostrum in particular because they guarantee to have 30% or more Immunoglobulin. Immunoglobulins are critical components in the colostrum since they promote so-called adaptive immunity to particular pathogens often present in the gut.

Another reason I decided to purchase Vitality Colostrum is because when I did my research, it is one of the few supplements that was 3rd party verified that it comes from cows free from pesticides, antibiotics and added hormones. To me, it’s most important that I buy a supplement that its pure and free for any chemicals.

If you buy Vitality Colostrum or any other Colostrum please comment and share your experience with me below.

City Cosmetics Total Eye Rejuvenating Serum Review

Published by:

City Cosmetics total eye rejuvenating serum is manufactured by City Cosmetics, an American-based company. The manufacturer claims that restoration of skin around the eye can be achieved with this effective serum. Basically, dark circles and bags under eyes, crowfeet and wrinkles, eye creepiness suppose to be diminished just after one (!) application.

Two the most critical active ingredients for skin restoration in this unique serum are SYNAKE synthetic snake venom and Persian Silk Tree Extract. These compounds present groundbreaking achievements in anti-aging skincare.  SYNAKE synthetic snake venom (or dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate in the ingredient list) is a synthetic version of the venom protein fond in the Temper Viper. It basically works as a mild Botox. Numerous clinical investigations demonstrated very high efficiency of SYNAKE in wrinkle reduction. The compound was developed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Pentapharm and received many patens and awards.

SYNAKE is used in many anti-wrinkle skin care products, however in City Cosmetic eye serum this powerful ingredient is combined with the bark extracts from beautiful Persian Silk Tree (Albizia Julibrissin). The product was developed by Sederma, a French company specialized in manufacture of finest natural compounds for the cosmetic industry. A very good science behind this product clearly demonstrates that Albizia Julibrissin bark extract has an incredible effect on the skin – it promotes deglycation of proteins that comprise the dermis, a fibroelastic layer of the skin. As we age, or as a result of poor, carb-rich diet, our body and skin specifically accumulate so-called advanced glycation-end products (AGE). These molecules are formed by non-specific binding of different carbs to various proteins (this process is called glycation), which make these proteins stiff and prone to damage. AGE are very toxic, although some of them can be cleared by the kidney, AGE that accumulate in the skin are extremely resistant to detoxification. Amusingly, Albizia Julibrissin bark extract stimulates removal of AGE from skin protein and thus restore the skin natural beauty, elasticity and coloration.

I absolutely love this serum, my skin around the eyes looks much younger and fresh. I ran the skin elasticity test and found an improvement in my under eye skin just after one week of application once a day.

My conclusion is: the total eye rejuvenating serum by City Cosmetics is a great product by a very good company. I definitely will be buying it in future.

City Views Rapid Repair Eye Cream Review by City Cosmetics

Published by:

City Views rapid repair eye cream is manufactured by City Cosmetics, an American-based company. The manufacturer claims that this cream reduces visibility of the crow feet, lines and wrinkles, diminishes puffiness and prevent sagging.

I got a sample of City Views as a gift, I did not know much of this cream and I had no idea how much it costs. Thus, for me it was a “blind test”. I always use and constantly test good eye creams from the department stores. Since I believe that the area around eyes is one of the most critical in the signs of aging specifically sagging and puffiness I do not want to take a risk for cheap eye cream or cream from not well-known producers. However, careful analysis of the ingredient list in City View convinced that it was probably safe to try this eye cream.

What in the gradient list made me confident enough to try it on myself?

I found that this cream contains good natural oils (jojoba and safflower), harmless synthetic lipids and vitamins A and E, which all are standard ingredients for contemporary cosmetics. Other ingredients important are: 1) zinc oxide, which serves as a mild sunscreen and helps to reduce irritability of the skin specifically around the eyes; 2) Pine Pinaster bark extract contains a plethora of antioxidants as well as substances that increase blood flow and thus make the skin looks younger; 3) and finally, probably the most important ingredient is extract from the Horse Chestnut bark. Why I think though? This extract is rich in saponins , which, in addition to their unique properties to clean and soften the skin, posses anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective qualities. Saponins enhance capillary constricting and, thus can prevent puffiness. They also inhibit activities of enzyme, which degrades matrices supporting the collagen fibres.

I was not disappointed with City View cream. Opposite, the effect was better than I expected. I do not usually have puffiness (unless it is allergy), however sagging and crow feet have become recently a big problem for me. After couple of weeks of of City View eye cream application my upper lid became visibly tighter, and appearance of wrinkle greatly diminished.

City View cream is absorbed very quickly by the skin, has a light and pleasant fragrance.

Summary

I highly recommend buying this product. I did not see any abjection for this – no cons, only pros.

City Lights Radiance Reflecting Cream by City Cosmetics Review

Published by:

City Lights radiance reflecting cream or skin brightener is manufactured by City Cosmetics, an American-based company. The manufacturer claims that this cream is formulated to “promote a brighter and more luminous complexion” by reduction “of the appearances and visibility of dullness, sun spots blemishes and discolorations”.

On their website, the company claims that they use the highest quality ingredients for their products, run vigorous testing of their products and “take the disciplines of art and technology”. These statements are impossible to check and are only to believe in them, since the company is relatively new and is not rated.

I received a bottle of City Lights as a gift, I did not know much of this cream and I had now idea how much it costs. Thus, for me it was a “blind test”. I have a very lightly colored and very sensitive skin.  I do not have any blemishes or discolorations, but sometimes my skin looks dull. Major problem for my skin is the following – any cream I buy from the drug or natural cosmetics stores is not works for me – it has just opposite effect on my skin. After application of anti-wrinkle creams I have wrinkles in areas where they were not present before, moisturizers make my skin dry and dull. It doesn’t matter if I use creams highly recommended by Vogue magazine or by Dr. Oz. So I always shop for creams in Sephora or in the department stores while constantly looking for something less expensive in Internet.

City Light cream was a very good surprise for me. It moisturizes very well, has a quit nice consistency, it smells pleasantly with slight touch of chamomile. This cream definitely enhances brightness of the skin and keeps the skin fresh and young.

Pros

City Light cream contains a set of natural antioxidants such as vitamins E, A and plant extracts rich in flavonoids, phenolic glycosides and phytosterols. Original combination of this ingredients and general formulation on this cream seems to provide good support for the skin health as the company claims it.

Cons

The main ingredient in City Light formulation that protects the skin from sunspots and discoloration is alpha-arbutin, which is working basically by inhibiting production of the brown pigment – melanin. Melanin is a natural sunscreen, thus it would be much better to have sunscreen in City Light cream.  Otherwise I apply sunscreen together with CityLight if I plan to go outside.

In summary,  the City Light cream is an excellent product with a very good price.

I recommend it very much.
